Guatemala calls its ambassador in Colombia for consultations

The Government of Guatemala has announced the call for consultations of its ambassador in Bogotá “for reciprocity”, while urging the Colombian Executive not to politicize “an issue of a legal nature” such as the accusation of the Guatemalan Prosecutor’s Office to the Colombian Minister of Defense, Iván Velásquez.

The Guatemalan Prosecutor’s Office has accused Veláquez of alleged corrupt activities during his time at the International Commission against Impunity (CICIG), a measure to which the Executive responded by calling his ambassador in the Guatemalan capital for consultations.

“We have decided by reciprocity to call the Guatemalan ambassador in Colombia for consultations”, the Guatemalan Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded on Tuesday, which has criticized the “outburst” of the Government of Gustavo Petro towards the Justice of the Central American country.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs regrets that the Government of Colombia turns a matter of legal order into a political one, making abrupt decisions without following the corresponding diplomatic steps,” he added.

In this sense, he has affirmed that for now he has not received any note from the Prosecutor’s Office on this case.

The Executive of Alejandro Giammattei has appealed to “democratic institutions, the rule of law and the separation of powers”, for which he trusts that this controversy will be resolved “through diplomatic channels and dialogue”.
