One Firefighter Killed, Another Missing in Landslide During Rescue in Santos
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A fireman died buried and another went missing while trying to rescue victims trapped under the rubble in the Macaco Molhado hill in Guarujá, Baixada Santista, in the early hours of Tuesday, March 3rd.
According to the State Police Communication Center, Corporals Marciel de Souza Batalha, 46, and Rogério de Moraes Santos, 43, both from the 6th Fire Brigade, went missing while on duty.
The two were trapped in a landslide on the Macaco Molhado hill, around 1:50 AM, and were buried under the rubble, according to the firefighters. Another four people died at the site and another four are still missing.
People living in the area pulled Corporal Moraes’ body out of the rubble, while Batalha remains missing. The death was confirmed early in the morning.
Moraes was a Guarujá native, married and leaves three children, two young men of 21 and 19, and a teenager of 16. Batalha, still missing, is married and has a daughter age 15.
According to the department, both have worked for 20 years as firemen.
