Europe and Central Asia are now the worlds most uncertain regions in terms of agricultural development

The agricultural sector in Europe and Central Asia faces significant uncertainty due to the war in Ukraine, according to a report by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

The conflict has resulted in infrastructure damage, loss of life, and labor displacement, destroying Ukraine’s export potential.

The ongoing war has made Europe and Central Asia the most uncertain region for agricultural development.

Restoring productivity in the agri-food chain will require substantial investment, as the conflict has caused damages exceeding US$2.2 billion in the primary sector alone, including machinery, warehouses, livestock, crops, and a significant reduction in grain exports.

The report predicts a slowdown in agricultural and fishery production growth compared to previous years.

By 2032, production is expected to grow by 7%, less than half the previous growth rate.

The main agricultural producers in the region, such as the European Union, the United Kingdom, Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, and Kazakhstan, currently account for 12% of the global agricultural sector’s value, but this share is projected to decrease to 11% by 2032.

Ukraine, which has been a major contributor to the growth in net exports from Eastern Europe, is expected to see a decline in the short term.

The extension of the grain export agreement remains uncertain, even though it was crucial for Ukraine’s trade. Restoring production in Ukraine will require substantial investments and time.

The report also highlights that the region is a major importer of agricultural products, with projected purchases increasing by 13% by 2032.

The conflict has added complexity to an already challenging agricultural landscape, affected by the pandemic, changing demand, logistics, and labor shortages.

The uncertainties surrounding conflict resolution, reconstruction timelines, and the impact of sanctions on Russia pose additional challenges for trade in the region.

Future agricultural agreements between the United Kingdom and the European Union will also play a significant role in shaping the agricultural landscape in the coming years
