The Ecuadorian president, Guillermo Lasso, will attend the summit of presidents of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) to be held on May 30 in the Brazilian capital, Brasilia, informed today, Sunday, the General Secretariat of Communication of the Presidency of Ecuador.

According to the press, Lasso will leave today, Monday, for Brasilia to participate in the summit of the international organization, created in 2008 as a boost to regional integration.

The Ecuadorian president, who currently governs by decree after dissolving the National Assembly (Congress) on May 17 and calling for early general elections, returns to Ecuador this Sunday from the United States, where he underwent a successful prostate operation.

His attendance to the summit comes at the invitation of his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, through a letter delivered by the Brazilian Foreign Minister, Mauro Vieira, during his official visit to the Andean country on May 3.

In statements to the press at the time, Vieira said that the summit would be a space to discuss issues of interest to the region.

“The objective of this summit will be to create the opportunity for a frank exchange of perspectives that will pave the way for a renewed South American integration,” he said.

At the beginning of April, Lula da Silva made official Brazil’s return to Unasur, a group composed of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela.
