Dollar Reaches R$5.70, Closes at R$5.66 Amid Central Bank Speculation

Tuesday saw the dollar’s value fluctuate significantly, initially peaking at R$5.70 before settling at R$5.665, up 0.22%.

This volatility followed renewed criticism of the Central Bank by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and his announcement to discuss currency measures.

Early in the day, the dollar started low but reversed course as Lula criticized the Central Bank and mentioned the need for action regarding the dollar’s rise.

This led to an almost 0.8% increase. However, late-session rumors about the Central Bank potentially intervening caused the dollar to stabilize and close at R$5.665.

On B3, the August dollar futures ended nearly flat, with a slight 0.04% increase to 5,677 points.

This closing price is the highest since January 10, 2022, when it was R$5.6723. On Monday, the dollar had risen by 1.15% to R$5.653.

President Lula’s statements about the Central Bank and his call for action on the rising dollar initially drove the currency up.

Later, rumors of possible Central Bank intervention led to market stabilization.

These consultations are typical during market stress to gauge the need for spot dollar sales or swap contracts.

Lula refrained from specifying potential measures against the dollar’s rise, citing strategic reasons.

He mentioned a speculative attack on the real and plans to discuss countermeasures in Brasília.

Lula also criticized the Central Bank, arguing it should not serve financial markets exclusively.

He emphasized improved fiscal communication and Central Bank autonomy as better solutions to stabilize the real.

It was noted by various market analysts that currency intervention is typically the Central Bank’s responsibility.

There was a general sentiment that the President could calm markets by pledging fiscal restraint.

Many believe the dollar’s stability against the real depends on ending criticisms of the Central Bank and adopting measures to balance public finances.

Central Bank President Roberto Campos Neto stressed the institution’s need to remain apolitical.

At a European Central Bank event in Sintra, Campos Neto stated that time would validate his work’s technical nature.

He also mentioned that uncertainties about leadership were raising the interest rate risk premium.
