Covid-19: Cuba lowers curve with 6,632 new cases and 52 deaths (September 27)

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Cuba recorded in the last 24 hours 6,632 new positive diagnoses of Covid-19 and 52 deaths, thus lowering the curve below 7,000 infections for the second consecutive day, although the epidemiological situation is complex, according to the daily report of the Ministry of Public Health (Minsap).

Today the report reports 33,841 active cases of the disease – 121 critical and 265 serious – as well as 6,911 hospital discharges in the last day.

Of the new infections, 6,632 are of autochthonous transmission and 8 are imported by travelers from Spain, Panama, United States, Dominican Republic, France and Russia.

Patients admitted to hospitals and their homes total 75,270 and of these, 38,337 are suspected of being infected with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, while 3,092 are under observation.

In total, the island has reported 860,799 confirmed cases of covid-19 since the first infections were detected in March 2020 and has 7,279 deaths.

During 26 days of September, 201,335 people were diagnosed positive and 1,902 died, for a daily average of 7,744 infections and 73 fatalities.

All 15 Cuban provinces report infections, but the main focus of the pandemic has been located for several weeks in Pinar del Río (east), where 1,574 people with covid were detected on Sunday.

The other territories with the highest incidence are Camagüey (center-east) with 805 cases, the central provinces of Sancti Spíritus (787) and Villa Clara (548), and eastern Granma (531).

Since last Friday, seven Cuban provinces – among them Havana and neighboring Matanzas – together with the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud resumed the de-escalation with the reopening of some services and measures relaxed by health authorities in view of the progress of the massive vaccination campaign in the country and the reduction of cases of the disease in their territories.

To date, more than 4.9 million people (43.9% of the population) have completed the three-dose schedule of the Cuban vaccines Abdala, Soberana 02 and Soberana Plus, and more than 8.8 million (79%) have received at least one dose of these formulas.

The Caribbean country is not part of the Covax mechanism created by the World Health Organization for middle- and low-income nations to access vaccines, nor has it purchased them on the international market.
