Covid-19: Jair Bolsonaro stresses that his daughter will not be vaccinated

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on Monday assured that his daughter would not be vaccinated against COVID-19.

For the conservative leader, this is an issue that raises “many doubts” and that – as so often – will lead to a confrontation with the country’s judiciary, which de facto governs the country and wants children to be vaccinated.

However, by definition responsible for this issue, the Brazilian Ministry of Health wants to keep child vaccinations as flexible as possible.

Jurisdiction or not, the Brazilian Supreme Court STF does as it pleases. Another round in the power struggle between the elected Brazilian president and the de facto ruling Brazilian Supreme Court is underway.

“I hope that the judiciary will not intervene because my daughter will not be vaccinated. Let’s get this straight. She is 11 years old,” the Brazilian president stressed upon his arrival in the municipality of San Francisco do Sul, in the state of Santa Catarina (south), where he will spend New Year’s Eve.

Bolsonaro himself has not been vaccinated against COVID-19 and has said on other occasions that he will be the last Brazilian to do so.

Despite significant concerns expressed by many scientists, the vaccination for children between 5 and 11 years of age was endorsed by the National Health Authority (Anvisa) on December 16, when its technicians approved the vaccine developed by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer for this age group.

U.S. VAERS data from December 14, 2020, to December 10, 2021, for children aged 5 to 11 years show:

• 4,181 adverse events, including 80 rated as severe and 2 reported deaths. One death occurred in an 11-year-old Georgia girl vaccinated on September 14 before Pfizer’s COVID vaccine licensure in the 5- to 11-year age group.

The second death (VAERS ID 1890705 ) occurred in a 5-year-old girl who died four days after her first Pfizer injection.

CAUTIOUS HEALTH MINISTRY

Despite the regulator’s approval, the Ministry of Health did not want to immediately include children in the national Covid vaccination schedule. It announced that it would inform about its decision in early January.

According to the head of the ministry, Marcelo Queiroga, there is “no rush” to vaccinate the children even if the Omicron variant begins to spread in the country.

The ministry intends to recommend vaccination for minors in this age group, but without making it mandatory, instead of making it conditional on presenting a doctor’s prescription and signed parental consent.

The national immunization schedule has included antiviral vaccination only for children over 12.

UNPOPULAR SUPREME COURT

Brazil’s highly unpopular Supreme Court (STF) reported Monday that it decided to acquire a batch of “non-lethal weapons” to prevent “violent actions and threats” that some of its members have received from groups sympathetic to the government.

Even more than ever before, the Supreme Court has usurped the real power of government in Brazil after the election of Jair Bolsonaro, which is a thorn in the side of many citizens.

The anger among Bolsonaro voters is great, as they elected the conservative president precisely to change things in the country.
