Colombia confirms record 27,000 new cases of coronavirus and 511 deaths (June 2)

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Colombian health authorities reported on Wednesday 27,000 cases of covid-19, a new record for the second consecutive day, reflecting the worrying third wave of the pandemic country has been experiencing for more than two months.

With today’s data, the country accumulates 3,459,422 infected, and 511 new deaths were reported, bringing the total to 89,808 deaths due to the coronavirus.

Meanwhile, vaccination continues at a good pace, and in the last day, 290,845 doses were applied for a total of 10,382,967 vaccinated in the country, of which 3,314,339 are people with the two doses (9.14% of the target of 70% of the population).

FIGURES IN THE RED

According to data from the Ministry of Health, Colombia closed May, the most lethal month since the beginning of the pandemic, with 3,406,456 infected and 88,774 deaths.

Of the total number of cases confirmed today, 139,870 remain active, equivalent to 4.04%.

Bogotá, with a high rate of infection, again registered the highest number of new infections today, with 10,524 positives, followed by Antioquia (2,951), Cundinamarca (1,883), Valle del Cauca (1,671), Santander (1,437), Bolivar (1,189), Magdalena (1,049), Norte de Santander (630) and Boyaca (540).

The Colombian capital, Bogotá, continues to be the main focus of the disease and accumulates 982,405 cases, followed by Antioquia (547,033), Atlántico (273,719), Valle del Cauca (271,721), Cundinamarca (168,593), Santander (136,884) and Bolivar (105,946).

According to health authorities, of the 511 deaths registered this Tuesday, 439 correspond to previous days.

The highest number of deaths occurred in Bogotá (129), followed by Antioquia (56), Valle del Cauca (54), Cundinamarca (37), Santander (28), Nariño (21), Atlántico (18), Norte de Santander (15), Córdoba and Cesar (14); Tolima (13), Boyacá (12), Huila and Bolívar (10).

Today, 108,414 samples were processed in the country, 58,415 of them of the PCR type and 49,999 of antigens, for a total of 17.2 million tests performed.

OPTIMISTIC PROJECTIONS

The mayor of Bogotá, Claudia Lopez, said that the city could immunize 70% of its population in 50 days and 100% in 100 days if the vaccination rate, which averages 52,000 doses administered per day, is increased.

According to López, vaccination is the most important element in the economic reactivation of the city, which will open all its sectors as of next Monday.

Bogota is the pandemic’s main focus and the region where most doses have been applied (2,044,593).
