Chile awards US$50 million to promote six green hydrogen projects across the country

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Chilean Government announced the award of the US$50 million financing round contemplated in the Green Hydrogen Strategy, launched in November last year. The objective is to contribute to the investment in electrolyzers to develop new Green Hydrogen Projects in the country, which should install a power of at least 10 MW each and come into operation no later than December 2025.

Thus, six are the selected initiatives that will receive part of the financing of US$50 million provided by the call and will be located in Antofagasta, Valparaiso, Biobio, and Magallanes, in the north, center, and far south of Chile.

ABOUT THE PROJECTS

Antofagasta Mining Energy Renewable (AMER): Initiative in charge of Air Liquide S.A. It expects to produce 60,000 tons per year of e-methanol from renewable energy, green hydrogen, and CO2 captured from a fixed source. An electrolyzer with a power of 80 W will be installed in the Antofagasta region.

GyEx-Green Hydrogen Production: Led by Engie S.A. It seeks to generate an industrial pilot-scale plant to generate 3,200 tons of green hydrogen per year from an electrolysis capacity of 26 MW in the region of Antofagasta. This green hydrogen will then be supplied to Enaex to produce green ammonia to reduce more than 30,000 tons of CO2 per year.

HyPro Aconcagua: Linde GmbH project. It expects to replace part of the current gray hydrogen production installed at the Aconcagua oil refinery, located in the Valparaíso region and belonging to Empresa Nacional del Petroleo (ENAP). It has a capacity of 20 MW and expects to generate 3,000 tons of green hydrogen per year.

Green Hydrogen Bahía Quintero: Led by GNL Quintero S.A. It contemplates developing, constructing, and operating the first large-scale green hydrogen plant, located in the Valparaíso region. The project will have an installed electrolyzing capacity of 10 MW, expected to produce 430 tons of green hydrogen per year.

Faro del Sur: Presented by Enel Green Power Chile S.A. It will produce 25,000 tons of green hydrogen per year in the Magallanes region, thanks to 240 MW of electrolyzers.

H2B CAP: Proposal of CAP S.A. It will develop a green hydrogen plant with an electrolyzer capacity of 20 MW in the Biobío region to produce 1,550 tons of green hydrogen per year and reduce more than 161,000 tons of CO2 per year.

It is estimated that the awarded projects will attract investments of US$1 billion, with an electrolysis capacity of 388 MW and with a size equivalent to what is currently in operation worldwide. These projects are expected to produce more than 45,000 tons of green hydrogen per year, which will reduce more than 600,000 tons of CO2 per year.
