  • —What happened Juan Manuel Aliste Vega, convicted of killing a police officer, died Sunday.
  • —The cause Stage-four cancer; in a Santiago prison hospital since 19 August.
  • —The pardon Filed 5 October with Kast; still unresolved when he died.
  • —The sentence 42 years, imposed in 2014, for a 2007 killing and robberies.

A humanitarian pardon request had divided the president’s own party in a country Washington counts as a key mineral partner.

Juan Manuel Aliste Vega, convicted of killing a Chilean police officer, died in a Santiago prison hospital on Sunday, 11 October 2026. He died six days after asking President José Antonio Kast for a humanitarian pardon.

The case had split Kast’s conservative Republican Party as his government seeks closer security ties with Washington. Chile also supplied 68% of US refined copper imports in 2021–2024, US data show.

What the Prison Service Confirmed

Gendarmería, Chile’s prison service, said Aliste Vega died on Sunday morning at the prison hospital of the Santiago Sur pre-trial detention centre. He had stage-four cancer and had been hospitalised there since 19 August.

According to the statement, he suffered a sudden deterioration and was treated by the hospital’s medical staff. They confirmed his death on site.

The prison service said it followed its standard protocols. A psychosocial team informed his relatives, and the Public Prosecutor’s Office was notified.

BioBioChile, a national radio and news network, reported that the cancer had spread to his pelvis, liver and both lungs. He was 53.

The 2007 Killing Behind the Sentence

Aliste Vega was a former member of the Lautaro Movement, a far-left armed group. He was convicted over the robbery of a Banco Security branch on Agustinas Street in central Santiago on 18 October 2007.

Carabineros corporal Luis Moyano was killed during the getaway. Carabineros is Chile’s national uniformed police.

In 2014, a court sentenced him to 42 years in total, BioBioChile reported. That included 18 years for Moyano’s killing and 10 for the attempted murder of a second officer.

Another 14 years covered robberies at Banco Security and Banco Santander. On 2 October 2026, the Supreme Court rejected a habeas corpus petition on his behalf, with one justice dissenting.

A Pardon Request That Split Kast’s Party

On 5 October, Aliste Vega filed a request for a particular pardon with the Justice Ministry, addressed to Kast. He asked for the rest of his sentence to be waived, or else commuted so he could receive palliative care at home.

“It is not possible to know for certain how much time I have left,” he wrote, urging an urgent review. The request was still at the information-gathering stage when he died, BioBioChile reported.

Some Republican lawmakers said they were open to considering the pardon on humanitarian grounds. Kast founded the party, which campaigns on public order and support for the police.

Deputy Macarena Santelices quit the party on 7 October over its stance, although she later said other factors also played a part. Jaime Gajardo, justice minister under former president Gabriel Boric, called the Republican support “an absolutely immoral bargaining chip.”

What It Means for You

For US investors, the case matters mainly as a gauge of Kast’s political capital. His first budget bill is heading into Congress, where he needs a disciplined party.

Chilean exposure trades in New York through the iShares MSCI Chile ETF and NYSE-listed shares such as SQM and Banco Santander-Chile. Chilean markets are closed on Monday, 12 October, for a public holiday.

The death has no bearing on travel or public safety in Chile. US visitors face no new restrictions or warnings linked to the case.

What Is Not Known

Gendarmería did not give an exact time of death. It is also unclear whether prosecutors will order an autopsy.

Kast never said how he would have ruled on the request. BioBioChile reported no government reaction to the death on Sunday.

What Comes Next

With Aliste Vega dead, the pardon request has no one left to benefit. The Justice Ministry has not said how it will close the file.

His lawyer told BioBioChile he does not rule out legal action. “The state was not a guarantor for him,” he said.

The political fallout may last longer. The dispute over the request has exposed rifts inside the Republican Party just as budget talks begin.
