Cadem Survey: 55% believe that Chile will do well or very well with the government of Gabriel Boric

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A week after Gabriel Boric’s victory in the presidential run-off, the latest results of the Cadem Public Square survey were released on Monday, showing that 55% believe that Chile will do well or very well with the new government.

In this sense, social rights (27%), crime, and public order (21%), together with economic issues (19%), are the priority areas that respondents determined that Gabriel Boric’s government will have to address.

Regarding the future government, 55% believe that Chile will do very well with Gabriel Boric, compared to 26% who think it will do pretty well and 13% who anticipate that it will do poorly or very severely.

This optimistic view is transversally shared by men (52%) and women (57%), young people between 18 and 34 (53%), adults (53%), and those over 55 (58%). It is also found in high (51%), middle (54%), and low (61%) sectors, inhabitants of the Metropolitan region (58%), and areas (52%). Finally, people who identify themselves with the center (53%), the left (79%), and independents (53%) also evaluate it as a positive future.

REASONS FOR VOTING

According to Cadem study 415, among the main reasons for having voted for Boric are “that he represents a change, the new” (66%), that “they liked his government program” (47%), and “for fear of a future Kast government” (30%).

Likewise, 10% justified their vote in favor of Boric, “because former Presidents Lagos and Bachelet supported him”, 9% as “rejection of Piñera’s government,” and 9% “because all the opposition supported him”.

In the case of Kast, 54% said they voted for him because of his ideas and proposals, 24% because of his recommendations for order and security, 15% because of his political position, and 35% because of his attributes.

Meanwhile, the attributes most valued about the President-elect are that he is tolerant of diversity (79%), that he knows the needs of the people (73%), and that he will be able to generate dialogue and agreements with all political sectors (66%).

APPROVAL OF THE PRESIDENT AND THE PANDEMIC

On the other hand, Chile’s perception is on the right track also increased. On the other hand, the study shows that confidence in the Constituent Convention increased by 5 points and reached 57%, its highest level since last July. It rose from 42% to 54% (12pts), its highest level since 2018.

Regarding the management of current President Sebastián Piñera, 27% of respondents approve of him, while 69% disapprove of him. At the same time, 79% agree that the government manages the covid-19 crisis, the highest figure since the pandemic began.

As for the priority areas for the next government, 27% mention social rights such as Education, Health, and Housing, 21% think it should devote more effort to fighting crime, public order, and drug trafficking.

Meanwhile, 19% believe that it should be economic issues: growth, employment, inflation, and investment. Meanwhile, 5% think it should be the new Constitution, 2% the environment, 2% immigration, and only 1% mention the coronavirus, according to the Cadem survey.
