Brazil’s Lençóis Maranhenses: A Natural Wonder Now Recognized Globally

At the 46th UNESCO World Heritage Committee session in New Delhi, India, the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park was named a Natural World Heritage Site.

Located approximately 250 kilometers from São Luís, the capital of Maranhão, Brazil, this park spans an impressive 155,000 hectares—surpassing the size of São Paulo.

Known for its vast sand dunes—the largest in South America—and the crystal-clear lagoons that appear during the rainy season, this area is a prime example of nature’s artistry.

Established over 40 years ago, Lençóis Maranhenses is managed by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio). It is renowned for its stunning natural beauty.

The park features significant geological features and habitats that are essential for biodiversity conservation, including those for threatened species.

The park’s candidacy for this prestigious title was first submitted in 2018. This reflected years of dedicated efforts to safeguard its unique landscape.

A New Chapter for Brazil’s Natural Heritage

Maranhão’s governor, Carlos Brandão, warmly welcomed the recognition by UNESCO. He expressed his delight on the social platform X (formerly Twitter).

In addition, he highlighted the benefits this recognition will bring to tourism and conservation efforts in the region.

“No doubt, this acknowledgment will bolster both the preservation and appreciation of our treasured natural asset,” Brando stated. He also thanked the Heritage Committee for their endorsement.

With this new status, Lençóis Maranhenses joins Brazil’s seven other Natural World Heritage Sites, such as Iguaçu National Park and the Atlantic Forest Reserves.

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay congratulated Brazil, emphasizing the enhanced protection this designation affords.

“This remarkable landscape of dunes and lagoons, shaped by extraordinary climatic and geological conditions, will now enjoy the highest level of international protection,” Azoulay remarked.

This latest designation brings Brazil’s total to 24 sites on UNESCO‘s World Heritage List. It underscores the country’s ongoing commitment to preserving its rich cultural and natural heritage.

The global recognition of Lençóis Maranhenses honors the park’s natural beauty. It also ensures its preservation for future generations.
