Brazilian state Paraná confirms record soybean harvest and wheat will have the largest area in history

The monthly report released by the Department of Rural Economy (Deral) of the Agriculture and Supply Secretariat of Paraná reinforced the record expected for soybean production in the 2022/2023 harvest.

Paraná should produce 22.18 million tonnes of soybean in 5.76 million hectares.

The volume is 82% higher than in the 2021/2022 cycle.

The productivity is 3,845 kg per hectare.

The head of Deral, Marcelo Garrido, explains that this good performance is due to favorable weather conditions.

This week, the harvest reached 77% of the area, an index that, despite being late compared to previous crops, should not affect the quality of the product.

About 90% of the soybean fields in Paraná are in good condition, and 10% are in average condition.

The area, estimated at 5.76 million hectares, is similar to the last cycle, with a 2% growth.

WINTER CROP

The Subjective Crop Preview (PSS) brings the first estimates for the winter crop.

In Paraná, wheat is expected to occupy the largest area in history, 1.36 million hectares, 13% more than in the 2021/2022 harvest.

This increase is due to the good prices paid to the producer, combined with the impossibility of planting the second crop of corn.

With this, a production of 4.5 million tonnes is estimated, a volume that, if confirmed, exceeds the result of the previous harvest by 32%.

CORN HARVEST AT 63%

The first corn crop of 2022/2023 is 63% harvested, according to Deral, and 83% of the fields have good condition, while 16% are in average condition and 1% are in bad condition.

Production is expected to be 3.76 million tonnes, 26% more than in the 2021/2022 cycle, when 2.98 million tonnes were produced.

The area is estimated at 387,200 hectares, 10% less than last season.

Regarding the second harvest, planting is in its final stage, reaching 93% of the total area this week, estimated at 2.52 million hectares.

This month there was a reevaluation of the area, which suffered a reduction of approximately 120,000 hectares compared to the February report.

Beans had a good performance and excellent quality in the first harvest of 2022/2023 in the assessment of the Deral technicians.

With the closing of the harvest, the report indicates the production of 197,400 tonnes, 1% more than the previous harvest, in an area of 115,000 hectares, 17% smaller.

About 86% of the volume has already been traded.

The planting of the second harvest ended this week.

According to Deral, 588,800 tonnes can be produced on 295,900 hectares.

If confirmed, the volume will be 5% higher than the 2021/2022 cycle, when 561,500 tonnes were produced, and the area is 12% smaller.

RECORD AREA FOR WHEAT CULTIVATION

The first estimate for the 2023 winter harvest shows a record wheat cultivation area in Paraná of 1.36 million hectares.

This total represents a 13% increase over the 1.2 million hectares sown in 2022 and, if confirmed, will be the largest wheat area in Paraná since 1990, when 1.80 million hectares were cultivated.

From this panorama, there is a possibility of harvesting a crop of 4.5 million tonnes in 2023, a volume 32% higher than the result of 2021/2022, when 3.4 million tonnes were produced.

“For this potential to be reached, producers need the help of the weather.”

“As the planting window is long in Paraná, producers, when possible, plant areas in different seasons, aiming to reduce the risk of losses,” says Deral’s agronomist Carlos Hugo Godinho.

According to him, climatic events such as prolonged droughts, excessive rains at harvest time, and late frosts have negatively impacted productivity in recent years.

CASSAVA PRODUCTION SHOULD ALSO INCREASE

Paraná may produce 3.14 million tonnes of cassava in the 2022/2023 harvest, 14% more than the volume harvested in the previous cycle, in an area of 135,900 hectares, 11% higher.

This increase in area is due to the good prices paid to the producer last year.

Last week, producers received, on average, R$1,054 per tonne of cassava placed in the industry.

This value represents a growth of 60% compared to the price in the same period last year, which was R$650.

So far, favored by adequate soil moisture, the harvest has reached 17% of the area, according to the Deral.
