Brazilian Markets Hit Record High as Inflation Slows Below Expectations
Brazilian financial data released Tuesday revealed the Ibovespa reached unprecedented levels while inflation delivered its biggest positive surprise in months.
The benchmark index closed at 139,541.23 points with gains of 1.02 percent, establishing a new intraday record of 140,381.93 points during trading sessions.
Market momentum accelerated after the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics reported May’s IPCA-15 inflation registered 0.36 percent.
This figure fell significantly below analyst expectations of 0.44 percent and marked the lowest May reading since 2020. The 12-month inflation rate declined to 5.40 percent from previous estimates of 5.49 percent.
Currency markets reflected the improved sentiment with the Brazilian Real strengthening against the US Dollar. The USD/BRL exchange rate closed at 5.6457, representing a 0.53 percent decline from previous levels.

This currency movement supported equity valuations and reinforced investor confidence in domestic assets. International markets provided additional support following Monday’s Memorial Day closure in the United States.
American indices posted substantial gains with the S&P 500 advancing 2.05 percent, the Dow Jones climbing 1.78 percent, and the Nasdaq surging 2.47 percent. These movements helped offset earlier concerns about global trade tensions.
Foreign investor interest remained robust with the iShares MSCI Brazil ETF recording inflows exceeding $464 million during May. This represents the largest monthly inflow since September 2021, bringing year-to-date inflows to more than $586 million.
Trading data from B3 confirmed strong participation across sectors with clear rotation patterns emerging. Technical analysis reveals the Ibovespa trading above all major moving averages, confirming the bullish trend structure.
The index sits above its 50-day moving average at 137,690 points, its 100-day average at 136,335 points, and its 200-day average at 129,194 points.
Current price levels approach the upper Bollinger Band at 140,432 points, suggesting potential overbought conditions in the near term. Market breadth supported the advance with 612 stocks rising against 321 declining issues.
Sendas Distribuidora led individual gainers with advances of 7.61 percent while CSN Mineracao topped the decline list with losses of 5.80 percent. Trading volumes remained elevated throughout the session, validating the price movements.
Agriculture Minister Carlos Fávaro addressed concerns about bird flu impacts, noting exports remain suspended to 24 countries while 128 trading partners maintain open access.
The inflation surprise strengthens the case for interest rate stability at current levels of 14.75 percent. Central Bank officials maintain their 3 percent inflation target with tolerance bands of 1.5 percentage points.
Market participants expect continued volatility as first-quarter GDP figures approach release on Friday. The combination of improved inflation data, currency strength, and sustained foreign investment creates favorable conditions for further equity advances toward the psychological 140,000-point threshold.
