Brazil to Manufacture Vaccines for All Latin America in Future Pandemics
Brazil’s Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), in a crucial step for pandemic preparedness, has partnered with the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations.
Together, they have established an agreement to manufacture vaccines for Latin America in upcoming pandemics.
They announced this pact at the Global Pandemic Preparedness Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
Fiocruz’s president, Mario Moreira, stressed the critical nature of this partnership for fairer global vaccine distribution.
He criticized prior models where mainly Northern countries handled vaccine production, which faltered during the COVID-19 crisis.
Moreira underscored, “It was proven ineffective.” He noted the vital role of Global South countries, with Fiocruz at the forefront.
World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom, through a video message, highlighted the proactive steps of Brazil’s Health Minister, Nísia Trindade.
Under her guidance during Brazil’s G20 presidency, pandemic preparedness has become a priority.
Adhanom warned that another pandemic is inevitable, urging learning from previous errors.
Adhanom commented, “We still have a long way to go before the world is truly ready for the next pandemic.
However, together, we are making significant strides.” This initiative represents a pivotal moment in enhancing global health security.
It aims to boost vaccine accessibility and production across Latin America, thereby avoiding past failures in global health crises.
