Murders of journalists in Latin America: impunity prevails in the region

November 2 marks the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists. In Latin America, 31 journalists have been murdered so far in 2022 and 95% of the crimes remain unpunished.

The date was instituted by the United Nations in 2013 after the murder of French journalists Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon while they were working in Mali that same year.

According to data from the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), so far in 2022, 31 journalists have been murdered in eight countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. 95% of crimes remain unpunished.
