Prosecutor Wants Special Jurisdiction for Flávio Bolsonaro

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – “There is a tendency to clear out the so-called privileged forum, which has no privilege, it is nothing but respect for the position held by the individual,” said Rio State Prosecutor Soraya Taveira Gaya, when giving a favorable opinion for Senator Flávio Bolsonaro to appear before the State Court of Appeals in the Queiroz case.

“We are dealing with a person who, in theory, would have committed crimes, supposedly shielded by the mandate he was exercising at the time, being the son of the current president, which boosts the nation’s interest in the outcome of the cause and in all motions contrary to proper public management,” she noted.

The State Prosecutor’s demonstration was harshly criticized by prosecutors investigating the deputy, one of President Jair Bolsonaro‘s sons. According to the prosecutors, “in 1999, the right to the privileged forum after the end of the electoral mandate was abolished from Brazilian law”. “Therefore, for at least two decades, state deputies are no longer tried by the Courts of Appeal after the end of their term of office”.
