University of São Paulo Ranked Among the World’s Best Universities

SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL – The University of São Paulo (USP) is among the best universities in the world in 40 of the 48 areas of knowledge assessed in a ranking published by the British consultancy Quacquarelli Symonds (QS).

In the overall ranking, USP ranks third in Latin America, behind the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina and the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

In 11 of the categories, the university is among the 50 most prestigious. Dentistry is the area with the best qualification, ranked 18th of all institutions assessed.

The ranking is conducted by a group of higher education analysts who have examined the performance of 13,138 university programs from 1,368 universities in 83 countries. The programs were divided into 48 areas of knowledge.

In the overall ranking, USP ranks third in Latin America, behind the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina and the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

USP’s top-performing areas include: Mining and Mineral Engineering (33rd); Modern Languages (42nd); Sports Science (42nd); Architecture (43rd); Civil and Structural Engineering (46th); Geography (47th); Law (47th); Veterinary Science (48th); Agriculture and Forestry (49th); and Anatomy and Physiology (49th).

The institutions’ assessment considers four indicators: academic reputation, reputation among employers, scientific citations, and faculty/student ratio, adapted according to each specific area of study.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) leads the ranking, with 12 courses in first place, and Harvard University ranks second, with 11.
