Data Show an Increase in Beef, Pork, and Chicken Commercial Slaughter

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – This second quarter’s result for livestock shows that cattle slaughter in Brazil increased by 4.1 percent, pig by 5.1 percent and chicken by 3.6 percent when compared to the same period in 2018.

The data were released yesterday, August 14th, by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). Compared to the first quarter of 2019, the slaughter of cattle grew 2.4 percent, that of swine rose 0.7 percent and that of chickens fell 1.5 percent.

During the period analyzed, 8.08 million cattle were slaughtered, with a total production of 2.01 million tons of carcasses, an increase of 3.6 percent over the first quarter and 5.5 percent over the second quarter of 2018.

Swine totaled 11.39 million head, reaching an accumulated carcass weight of 1.02 million tons, an increase of 2.5 percent over the previous quarter and 4.3 percent over the same period last year.

Chicken slaughter reached 1.43 billion heads, with an accumulated weight of 3.35 million tons. In the quarterly comparison, the number represented a decline of 1.0 percent, and in the annual comparison, the increase was 0.4 percent.

Raw milk production was 5.86 billion liters, an increase of 7.1 percent over the previous year and a reduction of 5.4 percent in the quarterly comparison.

The purchase of raw cowhide was 8.39 million whole pieces in the second quarter of 2019, a drop of 1.1 percent in relation to the previous quarter and an increase of one percent to that recorded in the second quarter of 2018.

Egg production reached 930.93 million dozens, an increase of two percent on a quarterly basis and 5.8 percent year-on-year.
