Brazilian Spring: Prosecutor General is against fines and seizure of protesters’ assets

The Deputy Prosecutor General of the Republic, Lindôra Araújo, rejected the request of the Public Ministry of Mato Grosso for fines and seizure of assets of demonstrators protesting against the outcome of the 2022 elections.

The Mato Grosso state prosecutor’s office said in its request that the protests in the state are out of control, even after the measures adopted by the Federal Supreme Court (STF).

It is said there has been a movement suggesting that new blockades may occur if there is no “recrudescence” in the preventive measures already adopted.

The request was made by Prosecutor General José Antônio Borges Pereira, from Mato Grosso.

He requested fines of R$20,000 (US$3,700) and R$100,000 (US$18,800)  for individuals and companies, respectively.

Lindôra said that the action would not be appropriate for the “individualization of responsibilities” and “application of coercive measures to individuals.

The PGR also said that the Security Forces of the State of Mato Grosso would be since the beginning of the demonstrations acting in conjunction with the Federal Highway Police (PRF) and that the integrated operation would have cleared the blockades on roads and highways without the need to use force.
