Brazilian President Lula reaffirms ties with Africa at meeting with Portuguese-speaking countries

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva landed in São Tomé and Príncipe on a Sunday morning to reaffirm ties with Africa at a meeting with Portuguese-speaking countries.

The 14th CPLP meeting – a gathering of Portuguese-speaking nations – provided an ideal opportunity.

This visit marks the end of Lula’s tour across Africa, a continent with which Brazil has been trying to strengthen ties due to historical and cultural connections and shared challenges in development.

He arrived on the continent the previous week to attend the 15th BRICS summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, a key event for Brazil as it seeks to solidify its position on the world stage amidst economic giants like China and India.

This was followed by a visit to Angola, a country with which Brazil shares linguistic ties and a history of Portuguese colonization.

He is scheduled to return to Brazil on Sunday night, with an expected arrival in Brasília at 18:15.

On the preceding Saturday, Lula mentioned on his X (formerly Twitter) account that the visit to São Tomé and Príncipe is a “significant moment for strengthening and exchanging between our countries.”

The CPLP serves as an important forum for Portuguese-speaking countries to discuss shared challenges and cooperate on various issues, from economic development to cultural exchange.

Brazil, being the largest Portuguese-speaking country in the world, plays a crucial role in this community.

This visit comes at a time when Brazil is keen on enhancing its diplomatic relations and asserting its role as a regional leader.
