Brazil: Latin America’s biggest scientific event starts in Brasília

Brasília hosts, until next Saturday, July 30, the largest scientific event in Latin America, the Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Society for the Progress of Science (SBPC).

In its 74th edition, the event has a hybrid format with more than 100 in-person activities at the University of Brasília (UnB) and 110 online, broadcasted by SBPC and UnB channels on YouTube.

The scientists and researchers meeting has the theme “Science, Independence, and National Sovereignty” since 2022 marks the bicentennial of Brazil’s Independence, the centennial of the Week of Modern Art, and the celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the University of Brasília.

It is the fourth time the UnB is hosting the event, which is expected to attract 6,000 people, in the four in-person centers of the university.

There are 12 subjects, including art, technology, and innovation. Among them: are the role of federal universities in fighting the pandemic, the importance of scientific research in maintaining democracy – especially in this election year – and the contribution to the 1988 Constitution, as well as agendas with an environmental theme.

Renowned researchers and managers of the state and national science, technology, and innovation systems will participate in panels, round tables, conferences, book launches, awards, and interactive physical activities during these seven days of SBPC.

In parallel, other actions occur during the week, such as the SBPC Cultural, which brings cultural presentations, circus arts, and film screenings. And also, the SBPC Youth promotes the contact of children and young people with scientific knowledge and with researchers, institutions, and laboratories from all over the country through exhibitions and interactive attractions.
