Brazil: Industry grows in nine of 15 locations analyzed by IBGE

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Industrial production grew in nine of the 15 locations surveyed by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) from February to March this year. The highest increase was observed in São Paulo (8.4%), according to the Regional Monthly Industrial Survey (PIM), released on May 10, in Rio de Janeiro.

Other states with increases above the national average (0.3%) were Ceará (3.8%), Mato Grosso (2.8%), Minas Gerais (2.4%), Rio de Janeiro (2.1%), and Paraná (0.6%). The only region analyzed in the study, the Northeast, had an expansion above the country’s average: 1.8%.

Other states with an increase were Amazonas (0.3%) and Bahia (0.1%). At the same time, six states had a drop in production: Santa Catarina (-3.8%), Pará (-3.3%), Espírito Santo (-3%), Pernambuco (-1.1%), Rio Grande do Sul (-0.3%), and Goiás (-0.2%).

OTHER COMPARISONS

Compared to March 2021, there were increases in eight places, with Mato Grosso standing out (22.9%). Seven had a drop, the most pronounced being in Santa Catarina (-9.8%) and Pará (-7.2%).

Mato Grosso also had the highest increase (25.6%) among the six sites with year-to-date production growth. Among the nine places with a drop in production, Ceará (-12.8%) and Pará (-12.2%) stand out.

In the 12-month period, Mato Grosso and Minas Gerais recorded increases of 7%. Another seven locations showed expansion in this type of comparison. Of the six locations in decline, the worst performances were Bahia (-8.2%) and Pará (-7.1%).
