Brazil generated 184,000 new formal jobs in March

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil generated a net 184,140 new jobs in March this year, the result of 1,608,007 hirings versus 1,423,867 firings of employees with a signed worker’s record book. The data are from the Ministry of Economy, which on April 28th, released the Monthly Formal Employment Statistics, the New CAGED.

The result was celebrated by Minister of Economy Paulo Guedes. He believes that, with the population vaccinated against Covid-19, the country is resuming sustainable economic growth, with emphasis on the service sector.

“Unlike the first wave [of the covid-19 pandemic] that hit us last year and destroyed 276,000 jobs in March, our reaction to the second wave, now, was the creation of 184,000 new jobs in the formal sector. And the big highlight is the sector that had been hit the hardest during the whole pandemic, the service sector, with almost half, 95,000 formal jobs. The last sector of the economy that was on the floor got up”, he said, during a virtual press conference to release the data.

The stock of formal jobs in the country, which is the total number of active labor contracts, reached 40,200,042 in March, which represents a variation of 1.46% in relation to the previous month.

In the year to March 2021, a net positive balance of 837,074 jobs was recorded, resulting from 4,940,568 new hirings versus 4,103,494 dismissals.

Isolated data

Last month, the data show a positive employment balance in the five economic activity groups: services, with the creation of 95,553 jobs, distributed mainly in public administration, defense and social security, education, health, and social services; general industry, which created 42,150 new jobs, concentrated in the transformation industry; construction, with a positive balance of 25,020 jobs; commerce, with more 17,986 jobs generated; and agriculture, livestock, forestry, fishing and aquaculture, which recorded 3,535 new workers.

All of the country’s regions had a positive balance in job creation, and there was an increase in formal work in 23 of the 27 states. The highlights are São Paulo with the opening of 50,940 jobs, an increase of 0.41%; Minas Gerais, which created 35,592 new jobs (0.84%); and Santa Catarina, with a positive balance of 20,729 jobs (0.93%).

The states with negative job balances in March are Alagoas, which closed 8,310 jobs, down 2.36%; Pernambuco, with a negative balance of 2,762 jobs, down 0.22%; and Ceará, which ended the month with 1,564 fewer formal jobs, down 0.13%.

For the whole country, the average wage for admission in March was R$1,802.65. Compared to the previous month, there was a R$60.76 real increase in the average entry level wage, a positive variation of 3.49%.
