RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil and Germany will engage in bilateral cooperation in the digital area. A working plan for 2021 and 2022 was adopted by both countries during the 1st Brazil-Germany Digital Dialogue, held by videoconference on Tuesday, March 16th, with the participation of representatives from the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovations (MCTI) and the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi).

The work plan will initially include three cooperation areas: internet governance and data policies; emerging technologies; and digital opportunities and business models. The plan will be reviewed annually by the two countries and will undergo adjustments, if needed, within the scope of the Brazil-Germany Digital Dialogue.

“It is a starting point for us to open a permanent window for dialogue with the Germans in the digital area. Germany is one of the leaders in this sector in the European continent, and Brazil is one of the leaders in Latin America,” said José Gontijo, MCTI’s deputy Secretary of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, one of the meeting’s panel moderators.

According to him, the partnership may provide a contribution between the two countries in several areas such as Industry 4.0, personal data protection, 5G internet application, and artificial intelligence.

The 1st Brazil-Germany Digital Dialogue was attended by several representatives from both governments and experts, who addressed two potential areas of cooperation between the countries. In this first virtual meeting, the topics covered were free flow, data policy and protection, as well as emerging technologies and digital business models. The opening of the event was also attended by Brazil’s Ambassador to Germany, Roberto Jaguaribe, and Germany’s Ambassador to Brazil, Heiko Thomas.
