IBOPE: Nearing Elections, Bolsonaro Government’s Approval Drops in Seven Capitals

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Bolsonaro government’s approval dropped in seven capitals after the start of the electoral campaign. IBOPE (Brazilian Institute of Public Opinion and Statistics) data from the 26 cities compiled by news site G1 show that the excellent/good rating showed a drop above the error margins in surveys conducted between the first and second half of October.

The largest variation in percentage points occurred in Salvador and Rio Branco, both down seven percentage points. In the first round of surveys, the capital of Bahia had shown the lowest rate of government approval (18 percent).

Currently, the excellent/good rating has dropped to 11 percent. As a result, Salvador highlighted the low government approval among the capitals. Rio Branco recorded a positive assessment of 48 percent in the first round, which dropped to 41 percent.

Boa Vista, capital of Roraima, maintains the highest percentage of excellent/good rating of the Bolsonaro government, but there was also a drop in the city, with a reduction of six percentage points. Positive ratings also dropped above the error margin in Belo Horizonte (-4 pp), Florianópolis (-5 pp), Porto Velho (-6 pp), and São Luís (-4 pp).

The excellent/good rating increased only in Tocantins capital Palmas, above the error margin when comparing the two periods. In the first round, 44 percent of voters in the capital of Tocantins approved the Bolsonaro government. The rate has now increased to 50 percent.

Growth in negative rating

Despite the drop in the excellent/good rates in the seven capitals, a simultaneous increase in the negative rating (bad/terrible) above the error margin was only observed in four cases. This was the case in Vitória, Rio Branco, Florianópolis, and São Luís. In the latter, the percentage of rejection rose from 46 to 54 percent.

In the capital of Espírito Santo, the negative rating rose from 44 to 51 percent. The positive assessment dropped four percentage points in Vitória, within the error margin.

The bad/terrible rating of the government in Rio Branco rose from 27 to 36 percent, an increase of nine percentage points. In the capital of Santa Catarina, the negative assessment rose from 47 to 53 percent.
