This follows a 0.8% decline recorded in January. The expanded retail segment showed remarkable annual growth of 5.2% compared to February 2024. Restricted retail, which excludes vehicles and construction materials, performed even better with 2.1% monthly growth.

The year-over-year increase reached an impressive 6.1%. Personal use goods led this growth with a 10.4% surge, followed by furniture and appliances at 8.0%.

Brazil’s Retail Sector Shows Resilience Amid Volatility

Automotive retail contributed significantly to overall growth with a 3.3% increase. Construction materials sales remained virtually flat at 0.1% growth. Only the clothing segment recorded negative performance with a 0.8% decline.

These February figures continue Brazil’s retail volatility pattern. Retail trade grew 4.7% throughout 2024, the strongest annual increase since 2012. However, December 2024 saw retail sales decline 0.1% month-over-month.

Brazil’s retail sector has demonstrated remarkable resilience since the pandemic. April 2021 saw record growth of 23.7% year-over-year, rebounding from the historic low of -17.1% in April 2020 during strict pandemic measures.

The e-commerce sector continues to expand its share of Brazil‘s retail market. Online sales accounted for 9% of all retail sales in 2024. E-commerce revenue projections suggest the sector will generate over $40 billion in 2025, potentially reaching $60 billion by 2027.
