Azul: traffic soars 523% in April, remains 37% below pre-pandemic levels

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Azul’s total passenger traffic volume measured in paid passenger-kilometers (RPK) rose 523% last month compared to April 2020, considered the peak of the Covid pandemic, but 37.5% below the same period in 2019, shows document sent to the market on Monday, May 10th.

Azul’s traffic in April retreated 9.1% compared to March.

Moreover, domestic passenger traffic recovered 76%, while domestic capacity (ASKs) recovered 80%, resulting in a 79% occupancy rate over 2019.

“In April, we continued to actively manage capacity according to demand, which was impacted by the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic and quarantine measures implemented nationwide,” said John Rodgerson, Azul’s CEO.

He further states that despite these challenges, “our unique network coupled with fleet flexibility enabled an 80% recovery of our domestic capacity, one of the world’s highest recovery rates.”

“Recent trends are positive and capacity recovery will accelerate in the coming months.” he added.
