Art Exhibition at Paço Imperial in Rio: Daily

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Rio is known for its marvelous beaches and relaxed lifestyle, but on a rainy day the city also has wonderful art to take in. To get an overview of diverse Brazilian artists from a different perspective, the art collector’s, visit the “Um outro olhar: Coleção Roberto Marinho” (Another view: Roberto Marinho’s collection) exhibition in Centro’s Paço Imperial.

The showing gathers 202 art pieces, some of which have never been seen by the public. The paintings are part of the personal collection of Brazilian journalist and businessman, Roberto Marinho, longtime president of the Globo media conglomerate.

With a keen eye and a passion for Brazilian art, Marinho collected works over a seventy-year period, before his death in 2003.

“Dad started very early, in the 1930s, he was in his twenties and he started getting close to some artists that later became very famous, like Guignard, Pancetti, and he started to buy his first paintings at very low prices and to form his collection,” said José Roberto Marinho, vice president of Organizações Globo, who visited the showing last Thursday.

“From there he never stopped,” Marinho added, “always with a clinical eye and formed this very beautiful collection that is exposed [at Paço Imperial].”

The exhibition opened Friday, June 14th and already drew a lot of visitors. Most art works are modernist or abstract, but there are also a number of religious paintings by renowned Brazilian artists, such as Emeric Marcier, which should attract visitors for the upcoming Catholic World Youth Day in Rio.

The two floors of the exhibit are organized differently. On the first floor, the art pieces are arranged according to different topics, such as portraits, landscape, childhood, religion and work.

The second floor is made up of abstract paintings, which are displayed according to artist, and a room with sculptures and tapestries. Roberto Marinho’s collection will be on display until August 11th and entrance is free. Opening hours are from Tuesday to Sunday from noon to 6PM.
