After fuel, electricity bills for customers of 10 utilities in Brazil will now also drop; see list
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – After fuel prices fell by an average of 17% due to the efforts of the Bolsonaro government and Congress, the National Agency of Electric Energy (Aneel) on Tuesday established discounts also the new, lower electricity rates of ten utilities.
This measure was also taken due to a law passed by the National Congress that establishes the refund to consumers of the federal VAT (PIS/Cofins) overcharged on electricity bills.

Find out about the utilities and the rebates on their electricity bills:
Energisa Borborema (Paraíba): – 5.26%.
Enel RJ (Rio de Janeiro State): – 4,22%
CPFL Santa Cruz (states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Paraná): – 2,32%
CPFL Paulista (state of São Paulo): – 2.44%
Energisa Sergipe (Sergipe): – 4,47%
Enel CE (Ceará State): – 3,01%
Neoenergia Coelba (Bahia): – 0,50%
Neoenergia Cosern (Rio Grande do Norte): – 1,54%
Neoenergia Pernambuco – Celpe (Pernambuco): – 4.07%
Sulgipe (Sergipe): – 4,88%
This bill was passed as part of the government’s offensive to reduce energy and fuel prices in the face of high inflation and the approaching election period.
The tariff reduction is due to the removal of the ICMS (state-level VAT) from the PIS/Cofins (federal-level VAT) calculation base, as stated by the Federal Supreme Court (STF).
The STF found it unlawful to include the ICMS in the federal tax calculation base. This decision resulted in credit in favor of consumers who had overpaid their bills.
