With a history of corruption, Lula da Silva’s minister appoints himself in council to earn extra salary

The Brazilian Minister of Social Security, Carlos Lupi, will join the Audit Committee of Sesc (National Trade Learning Service).

Lupi’s choice for the council was made by himself, that is, he appointed himself to the position with the objective of guaranteeing an extra monthly remuneration, in addition to the salary of a minister, which is almost R$40,000 (US$7,810).

The board in which Lupi joined meets at least once a month and, at each meeting, its members earn R$3,500 (US$683,27), which can be increased.

In recent years, the board held six monthly meetings, which guaranteed up to R$21,000 (US$4,100) per member.

In addition to appointing himself, Lupi also appointed the national treasurer of the PDT, Marcelo de Oliveira Panella, as a member of the Supervisory Board of Sesc.

In 2011, Panella was removed from the Ministry of Labor, when Lupi was minister, suspected of participating in a scheme with NGOs.

It turns out that, accumulating functions in public offices with the aim of earning more is already an old and well-known practice of Carlos Lupi.

Lupi became Minister of Labor in the first term of former President Dilma Rousseff, but he did not remain in office for long.

At the time, Lupi was fired from the portfolio due to the series of allegations of irregularities in the ministry, controversial statements and loss of support among his own PDT party colleagues.

The current president of the PDT was even accused of having accumulated, for almost five years, between 2000 and 2005, two positions of parliamentary advisor in completely different public bodies, one of them in the Chamber and the other in the City Council of Rio. of January.

He was even appointed as a “ghost” employee of the Chamber between 2000 and 2006.

At that time, the Chamber even opened an investigation to investigate the matter.

During his term at the head of the portfolio, the politician was also involved in a corruption scandal for traveling in a private plane at the expense of an NGO, as pointed out by a Veja report that year.

Lupi denied involvement, but the next day photos and videos of him leaving the jet surfaced.
