Brazil: change of government affects dispute over Fernando de Noronha

In the Atlantic, about 350 kilometers east of the Brazilian mainland, lies a paradisiacal archipelago.

The climate on the Fernando de Noronha archipelago is tropical hot all year round, and the archipelago’s beaches are among the most beautiful in the world.

According to TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel website, and based on feedback from millions of TripAdvisor travelers, the most beautiful beach in the world is once again on Fernando de Noronha.

Although it is located off the coast of Rio Grande do Norte, it is a state district of the state of Pernambuco and within the metropolitan region of Recife.

Justice Ricardo Lewandowski has now postponed to February 7 the sixth arbitration hearing in the dispute between the Federal Government and the Government of Pernambuco over the ownership of Fernando de Noronha. The meeting was originally scheduled for next week.

The reason: both in the Union and in the state of Pernambuco there were changes in the administrative staff due to the change of government.

The measure was therefore taken to “enable and encourage better organization and preparation of the hearing”.

This emerges from a resolution signed by Lewandowski, the rapporteur on the matter. The same document states that the “action is in an advanced stage of self-composition”.

It remains to be seen whether there will be any setbacks as both the federal and Pernambuco governments are under new leadership.

The lawsuit was filed by the federal government in March with a request for an injunction to regain ownership of the archipelago.

In the lawsuit, the Union Attorney General alleges that Pernambuco is violating a lease agreement and preventing the federal government from taking action to protect the area.
