Windstorm Leaves Over 1.4 Million Consumers Without Power in Santa Catarina State

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Santa Catarina Power Central (CELESC) reported that as a result of bad weather caused by instability during the formation of an extratropical cyclone with wind gusts of up to 110Km/h, at around 4 PM, over 1.4 million consumers had their electric power supply interrupted in the company’s concession area.

The occurrences began to be registered in the early afternoon, in western Santa Catarina, and spread to the coastline.

The cyclone, which consists of a low-pressure area, began to form in northern Argentina and was heading east. The low pressure area crossed the states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul and was expected to form a cyclone over the ocean, on the coast of Rio Grande do Sul, in the early hours of Wednesday, July 1st.

The CELESC teams are on the field acting in the affected areas.

The population is advised to remain in a safe place and report any emergencies to the Civil Defense (199), the Fire Department (193), and emergencies related to the electrical grid by calling 0800 048 0196.
