Used cars appreciate up to 50% in Brazil, outperforming most financial investments
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Buying a brand new car has always been ill-advised from the standpoint of financial education and investment.
After all, the traditional estimate is that as soon as it leaves the dealership, a new car is worth an average of 20% less than the purchase price. Who would have thought that the pandemic would reverse this logic and that cars would become an asset that appreciates in value?

Those who bought a new car in March last year can resell it now for up to 28% more than they paid, should the model be among the best sellers in the country.
This appreciation may reach almost 50% if the general sales ranking is considered, which includes luxury brand models. This is shown in a survey conducted by KBB for EXAME Invest. KBB is a global company specialized in car price research and comparison.
These percentages greatly exceed the average investments in the period. To get an idea, the CDI indicator that serves as a reference for fixed income investments, recorded a profitability of 4.54% between March 2020 and September 2021. Ibovespa, the main stock market index, appreciated 2.9%.
Whoever bought a Jeep Renegade Crossover (version 4P 1.8 16V FLEX 4×2 Automatic) at the start of the pandemic paid R$68,000 (US$12,514) and can now resell it for R$87,400. In other words, the transaction will yield 30% more than the nominal price paid, excluding the inflation effect.
The Volkswagen Gol (Hatchback 4P 1.0 12V Flex 4P 4×2 standard transmission), one of the most popular models in the Brazilian automotive market for decades, is ranked second in the list of models that appreciated the most between March 2020 and September 2021 – among the country’s best sellers. Those who bought the version in March last year for R$43,300 can now resell it for R$51,200. In other words, it will yield 18% more than the price paid in the transaction.
