UK-Brazil Year of Science and Innovation Brings Nobel Prize Winner to Rio

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – This month, the ‘UK-Brazil Year of Science and Innovation’ are concluding their year of collaboration with an extensive schedule of activities including the visit to Brazil of meteorology and climate trend expert Albert Klein Tank, and a lecture series by the British Nobel Laureate Sir Fraser Stoddart.

“The UK-BR Year of Science and Innovation has been an excellent opportunity to build new partnerships and to strengthen and expand the many that we already have.” comments Vijay Rangarajan, the UK’s Ambassador to Brazil.

He continues, “Brazil and the United Kingdom share a passion for science and recognize the value of science, innovation and technology in tackling global challenges to improve the lives of people and to protect our environment”

The next event that science lovers in Rio can look forward to is the Met Office Conference at the ‘Museu do Amanhã’ (Museum of Tomorrow), which is taking place at 10AM on Wednesday, April 3rd.

The lecture is entitled, ‘Climate Change: Present and Future Risks for Brazil,’ and will be given by the director of the renowned Hadley Cell at the Met Office, Albert Klein Tank.

A specialist in current and historical climate trends, Klein Tank will outline climate change scenarios for the future while trying to explain the partnership projects with Brazil through government bodies such as INPE, INPA, and CEMADEM (Climate Science for Service Partnership).

The final events of the Year of Science and Innovation will be marked by the visit to Brazil of Nobel Prize winner, Sir James Fraser Stoddart. The Chemistry Laureate in 2016 will visit three cities in Brazil – São Paulo, Brasilia and Rio de Janeiro – from Monday, April 8th, to Wednesday, April 10th.

He will give lectures and on stage interviews for students and scientists at the following institutions: ‘Universidade de São Paulo’ (University of São Paulo), ‘Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária’ (National Agency of Sanitary Surveillance), ‘Universidade de Brasília’ (University of Brasilia), and ‘Instituto Nacional de Câncer’ (National Cancer Institute).
