U.S. Arms F-16 Jets with 200-Mile Strike Range Ship Killers for Pacific Showdown

The US Navy announced plans to integrate the AGM-158C Long-Range Anti-Ship Missile onto F-16 Viper fighter jets. Naval Air Systems Command intends to award Lockheed Martin Corporation a contract for the integration and testing of this advanced weapon system.

This upgrade significantly enhances American military capabilities in potential conflicts with China. The stealth missile extends attack range to 200 miles and features autonomous route-planning technology.

The weapon automatically adjusts its flight path when facing threats and tracks targets through radio-frequency emissions. The F-16 integration represents the latest expansion of platforms capable of deploying the sophisticated LRASM.

Currently, only F/A-18E/F Super Hornets and B-1 bombers carry this powerful missile. Pentagon officials aim to broaden deployment options as part of their Pacific strategy. Each missile carries a 450-kilogram warhead designed to inflict severe damage on naval vessels.

LRASM Missile Upgrade Enhances U.S. Military Deterrence

The stealthy design makes the LRASM far more difficult to detect than older Harpoon missiles. In its terminal flight phase, the missile uses passive infrared sensors to identify and target vulnerable areas of enemy ships.

The integration testing will include both legacy systems and the new Universal Armament Interface. This standardized interface supports rapid weapons integration independent of aircraft software cycles. The Air Force previously tested this interface with the missile’s predecessor, the JASSM.

The F-16 missile upgrade forms part of the $9.9 billion Pacific Deterrence Initiative for 2025. This program prioritizes investments that strengthen American force posture against Chinese military expansion.

The strategy focuses on enhancing military infrastructure, communications, and missile defense throughout the Indo-Pacific region. Defense analysts note a developing variant, the AGM-158C-3, will nearly double the current missile’s range to approximately 600 miles.

The extended capability would significantly amplify F-16 strike capacity in maritime environments. This development follows efforts to equip other aircraft with similar capabilities.

These efforts include plans to integrate LRASM onto P-8 Poseidon patrol aircraft and several F-35 Joint Strike Fighter variants. The comprehensive approach aims to create multiple deployment options for these advanced weapons systems.
