Musk Calls for U.S. Exit from NATO, Challenging European Defense Funding

Elon Musk has once more publicly backed the withdrawal of the United States from NATO, stating on his X platform Sunday that “America funding Europe’s defense makes no sense.” This statement aligns with growing tensions between the US and European allies.

Musk, who serves as head of the Department of Government Efficiency in the Trump administration, endorsed a post urging America to “Exit NATO now!” His comment: “We really should” has sparked immediate concern across European capitals.

The billionaire’s remarks arrive at a critical moment for the 76-year-old alliance. President Trump has repeatedly criticized European members for insufficient defense spending. Trump recently told reporters that countries failing to meet spending targets cannot expect American protection.

“If they don’t pay, I’m not going to defend them,” Trump stated bluntly from the Oval Office earlier this month. His administration wants allies to spend 5% of GDP on defense, far above current levels.

European Union leaders have responded with urgency to these developments. The EU Commission has unveiled an ambitious “ReArm Europe” plan to mobilize approximately €800 billion ($841 billion) for defense.

This comprehensive strategy includes €150 billion in loans to member states and provisions enabling countries to spend €650 billion over four years without triggering budget penalties. European defense spending reached €326 billion in 2024, about 1.9% of the EU’s GDP.

Europe’s military capabilities remain heavily dependent on American support. The continent relies on US resources for communications, intelligence, logistics, and strategic firepower capacities developed during decades of partnership.

Trump cannot easily withdraw from NATO despite his rhetoric. A 2023 law requires either a two-thirds Senate majority or congressional approval for any NATO exit, limiting executive power on this issue.

Musk previously indicated support for leaving both NATO and the United Nations on March 2, adding momentum to isolationist perspectives within the administration. His influence has grown substantially through his leadership role focused on federal spending reductions.
