São Paulo’s IPC-Fipe, a closely watched cost-of-living gauge, slowed to a 0.35% rise in the second four-week reading of January. The first reading showed 0.39%. The cooler headline looks comforting. The composition tells a more complicated story.

Transport costs accelerated to 1.36% from 1.13%. Education jumped to 1.86% from 0.83%. Clothing stayed elevated at 1.00%, slightly above 0.96%.

Health prices also firmed, rising 0.10% after 0.04%. These moves matter because they hit households through commuting, school bills, and routine purchases.

Other categories pulled in the opposite direction. Housing fell further, to -0.18% from -0.09%. Personal expenses slowed sharply to 0.20% from 0.66%.

Food inflation eased as well, with the group’s pace cited around 0.20%. The detailed table shows 0.21% for the category, which is consistent with rounding differences.

That mix explains how inflation can “slow” while many families still feel squeezed. A single headline number averages very different bills.

Rising Costs for Brazilian Households

At the start of the year, education fees and transport costs often become more visible. They can dominate household perceptions, even when housing or food provides relief.

It also helps to know how IPC-Fipe is built. FIPE tracks prices paid in São Paulo by families earning roughly one to ten minimum wages. The four-week readings are calculated using an eight-week window.

Each new release adds the latest week of price collection. It drops the oldest week at the same time. That rolling method can make the index sensitive to short bursts in fuel, fares, or school-related items.

For wider context, FGV’s IPC-S rose 0.43% in its second January four-week reading. It reported 4.43% inflation over 12 months.

Transport was also the largest upward contributor there. Different baskets and geographic coverage limit direct comparisons. Still, both signals point to persistent pressure in everyday mobility costs.
