Rio Hosts ‘Dança em Trânsito’ Contemporary Dance Festival this Week

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The “Dança em Trânsito” (Dance in Transit) festival is back to Rio’s stages. Gathering fourteen different contemporary dance companies from Brazil and abroad, the event presents 21 spectacles and four workshops until August 27th.

In its fifteenth year, the project aims to stimulate the artistic exchange between diverse companies from across the world. Also, it is an opportunity for both professional and amateur dancers to get in touch with new dance expressions.

“The Dança em Trânsito keeps coherent to the idea of valuing the contemporary dance in Brazil. This is where different dance languages and origins meet. We are always looking for expanding the contemporary dance to broader audiences, to democratize it”, says Giselle Tilápias, the festival’s artistic director and curator.

Taking place in at least ten different venues in Centro and Zona Sul, this edition will bring fourteen companies, seven foreign and seven Brazilian, and twelve unreleased spectacles (out of 21), with two of them including special effects. What’s more, the event offers four different workshops, lead by members of the participant companies.

This evening, August 23rd, the French group Affari Esteri | Edmond Russo & Shlomi Tuizer presents “The State” at 6PM at Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil. Tomorrow, August 24th, director Edmondo Russo leads a workshop at 9:30 AM at the Cacilda Becker theater, in Largo do Machado, along with Flávia Tápias, Tápias group’s director, Gaétan Jamard (France) and Hector Praza and Agnes Sales (Spain). Later on Thursday, August 23rd, at 3PM, Cacilda Becker theater hosts “Ouroboros”, a Tápias group’s spectacle that is co-produced by French company Le Bords de Scènes. Following, South Korean company SIGA, performing for the first time in Brazil, will present “Equilibrium”, directed by Lee Jae-Young.

The SIGA company returns to the stage on Friday, August 25th, to present its other work,”Rest”, at 5PM at Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil. This presentation will be preceded by “Alien Express”, a spectacle on the archetypes of History, run by Slovenian directors Žigan Krajnčan and Gašper Kunšek.

Opening Saturday’s line up, on August 26th, will be Brazilian company NIMO, which will present “Luz no Olhar e no Tempo” (Light in The Eyes and in the Time) at 2PM, at Cacilda Becker. Brazilian dancer Jorge Ferreira interprets “Temor and More” at 6PM, a French coreographer Herman Diephuis’ creation, followed by “Espelho da Lua” (Moon’s Mirror), by Brazilian company Mário Nascimento, both taking place at Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, in Centro.

The festival closes on Sunday, August 27th, with 13 performances, some of them happening in public venues. At 1:30 PM, the Ana Vitória contemporary dance company, from Portugal, presents “Cabeça Coletiva” in front of Museu do Amanhã, in Centro.

The Korean spectacle “Equilibrium” will be presented again on this day, at 4:30 PM, at the Candelária Church’s grass. At 5:30 PM, Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil’s facade will be the stage for “Segredo”, a performance created by “Dança em Trânsito” in partnership with VISUALFARM.
