The Pedra do Sal is where samba began. The rock outcrop on the Largo João da Baiana in the Saúde port district — where enslaved Africans once unloaded salt from ships — became the gathering point for the city’s Black community in the early twentieth century. Tia Ciata held her rodas here. Donga composed “Pelo Telefone” in these streets. Pixinguinha, João da Baiana and Heitor dos Prazeres played on these cobblestones. Today the Pedra do Sal holds a weekly Monday samba roda that connects the present to that origin — musicians gather from early evening on the carved stone steps, the barraquinhas sell cerveja and caipirinha, and the crowd fills the Largo under the open sky. The Monday roda plays the classics of samba de raiz, choro and partido-alto in an outdoor setting that no indoor venue can replicate. Free. No cover. Arrive from 7 pm — the roda builds naturally. Monday at the Beco do Rato is the quietest night of the week — but the bar stays open. Rua Joaquim Silva, 11, in Lapa, is one of the only confirmed live samba addresses in the neighbourhood tonight: Rio Scenarium is dark (opens Wednesday), the Carioca da Gema is dark (closed Sunday and Monday), and the Circo Voador runs event-dependent programming. The Beco do Rato’s Monday crowd is small and local — the musicians play for themselves as much as for the audience, and the intimacy of the courtyard on a quiet night has its own reward. No cover. Cold beer, pastéis de angu, carne-seca com abóbora. The 28°C clear evening makes the courtyard the best option. Nova Capela is a three-minute walk for food. Metro Cinelândia, ten minutes on foot.

Nova Capela on Avenida Mem de Sá, 96, is open seven days a week — and on Monday, when the surrounding venues are dark, it becomes the anchor of the Lapa corridor. The 123-year-old Patrimônio Cultural Carioca keeps the kitchen running until late: cabrito assado (the house signature), feijoada, carne-seca, bolinho de bacalhau, alongside cold chope and caipirinhas. The marble tables, tiled floors and century-old interior give the room a gravity that the weekend crowd rarely pauses to appreciate. Monday is the night to sit in Nova Capela and listen to the building itself. Three minutes from the Beco do Rato. Metro Cinelândia, ten minutes on foot. Pair with the Pedra do Sal roda earlier in the evening: VLT from Saúde to Cinelândia, then walk to Mem de Sá.

Monday night on the Copacabana boardwalk under 28°C clear skies is one of the simplest and best experiences the city offers. The beachside kiosks along Avenida Atlântica from Posto 2 to Posto 6 are open every night, no cover, cold beer and caipirinhas under awnings. The Blue Note Rio calçadão is dark tonight (the club opens Tuesday), but the kiosks fill the gap. The crowd is thinner than the weekend — couples, locals walking the calçadão mosaic, the occasional jogger — and the Atlantic is audible between conversations. The Forte de Copacabana at the tip of the beach is visible from the kiosks — its Confeitaria Colombo outpost is open Tue–Sun but the fort’s silhouette against the clear sky is part of the scenery tonight. Jobi on the corner of Rua Ataulfo de Paiva and Rua Dias Ferreira in Leblon is one of Rio’s defining botecos — a bar that has been serving cold Brahma, pastéis and petiscos from the same corner since the 1950s. Monday at Jobi is the night when the Leblon regulars come out without the weekend tourists, the tables on the pavement fill slowly, and the conversation carries further than the music. The bar is open every day and the kitchen runs a full menu of boteco standards: bolinhos de bacalhau, sardinha na brasa, filé com fritas, and the cold chope that Jobi has built its reputation on. The Rua Dias Ferreira strip is quieter on Monday but Bracarense (R. José Linhares, 7) and the surrounding restaurants keep the block lit. Metro Antero de Quental (Line 4). The boardwalk walk from Copacabana to Leblon via Arpoador and Ipanema is twenty-five minutes on foot — a 28°C Monday evening walk that rewards the effort.
