Monday reset: Pedra do Sal holds its weekly samba roda · Beco do Rato stays open seven days · Nova Capela keeps the kitchen running · 28°C, clear

01
Tonight’s Vibe Menu
Monday is the reset night in Rio de Janeiro — the city exhales after the weekend, the major venues go dark, and the musical energy retreats to the places that never close. The Blue Note Rio is dark tonight — the club opens Tuesday through Sunday. Rio Scenarium dark — opens Wednesday through Saturday. Carioca da Gema dark — closed Sundays and Mondays. Bip Bip dark — the weekly rotation starts Tuesday (choro). What remains is older and more elemental. The Pedra do Sal — the historic largo in the Saúde port district where samba was born — holds its Monday roda from early evening. The site where Tia Ciata, Donga, Pixinguinha and the first generation of sambistas gathered in the early twentieth century now hosts a weekly gathering that plays the classics on the cobblestones, with barraquinhas de cerveja and caipirinha from the surrounding vendors. In Lapa, the Beco do Rato stays open — one of the only confirmed live samba addresses in the neighbourhood tonight. Nova Capela keeps the kitchen running until late. This is part of The Rio Times’ daily Rio de Janeiro nightlife coverage for expats and visitors. In Copacabana, the boardwalk kiosks are the constant — open every night, no cover, and tonight’s 28°C clear skies make them the best they’ve been all month. In Leblon, Jobi stays consistent. The week ahead: Lollapalooza Brasil in four days. Lewis Capaldi at Qualistage on Wednesday. Flávia Bittencourt at Blue Note Rio on Wednesday.

Venue by venue

1Pedra do Sal — Monday Samba Roda
Samba · Historic · Saúde

The Pedra do Sal is where samba began. The rock outcrop on the Largo João da Baiana in the Saúde port district — where enslaved Africans once unloaded salt from ships — became the gathering point for the city’s Black community in the early twentieth century. Tia Ciata held her rodas here. Donga composed “Pelo Telefone” in these streets. Pixinguinha, João da Baiana and Heitor dos Prazeres played on these cobblestones. Today the Pedra do Sal holds a weekly Monday samba roda that connects the present to that origin — musicians gather from early evening on the carved stone steps, the barraquinhas sell cerveja and caipirinha, and the crowd fills the Largo under the open sky. The Monday roda plays the classics of samba de raiz, choro and partido-alto in an outdoor setting that no indoor venue can replicate. Free. No cover. Arrive from 7 pm — the roda builds naturally. The site is an Afro-Brazilian cultural heritage landmark. VLT Parada dos Navios or Parada dos Museus. Ten minutes from Praça Mauá and the MAR (Museu de Arte do Rio).

Mon from evening · Free
Largo João da Baiana, s/n – Saúde
VLT Parada dos Navios

2Beco do Rato — Monday Courtyard Samba
Samba de raiz · No cover

Monday at the Beco do Rato is the quietest night of the week — but the bar stays open. Rua Joaquim Silva, 11, in Lapa, is one of the only confirmed live samba addresses in the neighbourhood tonight: Rio Scenarium is dark (opens Wednesday), the Carioca da Gema is dark (closed Sunday and Monday), and the Circo Voador runs event-dependent programming. The Beco do Rato’s Monday crowd is small and local — the musicians play for themselves as much as for the audience, and the intimacy of the courtyard on a quiet night has its own reward. No cover. Cold beer, pastéis de angu, carne-seca com abóbora. The 28°C clear evening makes the courtyard the best option. Nova Capela is a three-minute walk for food. Metro Cinelândia, ten minutes on foot.

Mon from evening
R. Joaquim Silva, 11 – Lapa

3Nova Capela — Monday Kitchen · Lapa
Kitchen · Lapa · 123 years

Nova Capela on Avenida Mem de Sá, 96, is open seven days a week — and on Monday, when the surrounding venues are dark, it becomes the anchor of the Lapa corridor. The 123-year-old Patrimônio Cultural Carioca keeps the kitchen running until late: cabrito assado (the house signature), feijoada, carne-seca, bolinho de bacalhau, alongside cold chope and caipirinhas. The marble tables, tiled floors and century-old interior give the room a gravity that the weekend crowd rarely pauses to appreciate. Monday is the night to sit in Nova Capela and listen to the building itself. Three minutes from the Beco do Rato. Metro Cinelândia, ten minutes on foot. Pair with the Pedra do Sal roda earlier in the evening: VLT from Saúde to Cinelândia, then walk to Mem de Sá.

Mon open late
Av. Mem de Sá, 96 – Lapa
Cabrito assado · Chope · Metro Cinelândia

4Copacabana Boardwalk — Monday Under the Stars
Beach · Kiosks · 28°C

Monday night on the Copacabana boardwalk under 28°C clear skies is one of the simplest and best experiences the city offers. The beachside kiosks along Avenida Atlântica from Posto 2 to Posto 6 are open every night, no cover, cold beer and caipirinhas under awnings. The Blue Note Rio calçadão is dark tonight (the club opens Tuesday), but the kiosks fill the gap. The crowd is thinner than the weekend — couples, locals walking the calçadão mosaic, the occasional jogger — and the Atlantic is audible between conversations. The Forte de Copacabana at the tip of the beach is visible from the kiosks — its Confeitaria Colombo outpost is open Tue–Sun but the fort’s silhouette against the clear sky is part of the scenery tonight. Metro Cardeal Arcoverde or Siqueira Campos.

Mon · Kiosks open late · No cover
Av. Atlântica – Copacabana
28°C · Clear · Metro Cardeal Arcoverde

5Jobi — Monday Leblon · Cold Brahma
Boteco · Leblon · Daily

Jobi on the corner of Rua Ataulfo de Paiva and Rua Dias Ferreira in Leblon is one of Rio’s defining botecos — a bar that has been serving cold Brahma, pastéis and petiscos from the same corner since the 1950s. Monday at Jobi is the night when the Leblon regulars come out without the weekend tourists, the tables on the pavement fill slowly, and the conversation carries further than the music. The bar is open every day and the kitchen runs a full menu of boteco standards: bolinhos de bacalhau, sardinha na brasa, filé com fritas, and the cold chope that Jobi has built its reputation on. The Rua Dias Ferreira strip is quieter on Monday but Bracarense (R. José Linhares, 7) and the surrounding restaurants keep the block lit. Metro Antero de Quental (Line 4). The boardwalk walk from Copacabana to Leblon via Arpoador and Ipanema is twenty-five minutes on foot — a 28°C Monday evening walk that rewards the effort.

Mon · Open daily
R. Ataulfo de Paiva, 1166 – Leblon
Cold Brahma · Pastéis · Metro Antero de Quental

Suggested Route
One way to do it
1
5:00 pm — Copacabana boardwalk for the sunset
Start on the sand. 28°C, clear skies — the sunset over the Atlantic is the evening’s opening act. The kiosks between Posto 4 and Posto 5 face due west. Cold beer. No cover. No plan needed.
2
7:00 pm — Pedra do Sal for the Monday samba roda
Metro from Siqueira Campos to Central, then VLT to Parada dos Navios. The roda begins from early evening on the cobblestones — samba de raiz at the birthplace of the genre. Free. Bring cash for the barraquinhas.
3
9:00 pm — Nova Capela for cabrito assado
VLT from Saúde to Cinelândia, then walk to Av. Mem de Sá, 96. The 123-year-old kitchen is the destination. Cabrito assado, cold chope, marble tables. The Beco do Rato courtyard is three minutes away if the samba calls.
4
10:30 pm — Ride-hail to Leblon for Jobi
The coda. Lapa to Leblon: twenty minutes by car, minimal surge on Monday. Cold Brahma at the corner of Dias Ferreira. Or ride-hail back to Copacabana and walk the boardwalk under the stars. The week starts tomorrow.

05
Still Going After 22h
Late night
Monday after 10 pm is the quietest night in Rio de Janeiro. In Lapa, Nova Capela keeps the kitchen open and the Beco do Rato courtyard may still have musicians, but the neighbourhood is otherwise dark. In Copacabana, the boardwalk kiosks stay open late — the 28°C clear evening is the consolation for the lack of live music. In Leblon, Jobi stays consistent but the Dias Ferreira strip winds down early. The Pedra do Sal roda wraps by 10–11 pm. Dark tonight: Blue Note Rio (opens Tuesday), Rio Scenarium (opens Wednesday), Carioca da Gema (opens Tuesday), Bip Bip (starts Tuesday with choro), Fundição Progresso (event-dependent), Audio Rebel (check @audiorebel). Monday is the night to accept the city’s quiet — eat well, drink cold beer, walk the boardwalk, and prepare for the week. The Lollapalooza build-up starts tomorrow.

06
Plan B
More tonight

Oscar aftermath — Last night’s ceremony may have given “O Agente Secreto” and Wagner Moura their moment. The morning papers and social media will tell the story. If Brazil won: the week will carry the energy. If not: the music continues regardless.

MAR — Museu de Arte do Rio — Praça Mauá, 5, Centro. Open Tue–Sun 10h–17h. Closed today (Monday) but noted for the week — pair with a future Pedra do Sal visit. The MAR is ten minutes from the Pedra do Sal. Free admission on Tuesdays.

Bracarense — Monday Leblon — R. José Linhares, 7, Leblon. The pastelaria that anchors the other end of the Dias Ferreira block from Jobi. Cold beer, pastéis, and the quiet Monday rhythm of the neighbourhood. Metro Antero de Quental.

Dark tonight (full list) — Blue Note Rio · Rio Scenarium · Carioca da Gema · Bip Bip · Circo Voador (event-dependent) · Fundição Progresso (event-dependent) · MAM Rio (closed Mondays). All reopen this week.

Lollapalooza Brasil 2026 — Four days out — March 20–22, Autódromo de Interlagos, São Paulo. Sabrina Carpenter, Lorde, Chappell Roan, Tyler the Creator, Deftones, Skrillex. Sideshows begin this week in both cities. The music calendar intensifies from here.

This week in Rio — Tue: Blue Note Rio reopens (Bip Bip choro roda, Carioca da Gema reopens). Wed: Flávia Bittencourt “De Dominguinhos a Zé Ramalho” at Blue Note Rio 22h30. Lewis Capaldi at Qualistage. Thu: Samba Independente dos Bons Costumes at Fundição Progresso. Fri 20: Nova Orquestra toca Black Sabbath “Paranoid” (na íntegra) at Blue Note Rio 22h30. Sat 21: Orquestra Imperial “Erasmo Imperial” at Circo Voador.

Rock in Rio 2026 — September 4–13, Cidade do Rock. Elton John, Stray Kids, Maroon Five, Demi Lovato confirmed. The city’s biggest music event of the year — still six months out, but the lineup is building.

Getting Around
Transport intel
Metro: This Rio de Janeiro nightlife guide recommends the metro and VLT for Monday travel. MetrôRio runs its full weekday schedule until midnight. VLT (light rail) connects Central to the Saúde port district (Pedra do Sal) — Parada dos Navios or Parada dos Museus stations. Key metro stations: Cardeal Arcoverde or Siqueira Campos for Copacabana. Cinelândia for Lapa (Beco do Rato, Nova Capela). Antero de Quental (Line 4) for Leblon (Jobi).
Weather: Clear and warm — 28°C, 5% rain. The second consecutive clear night. The Pedra do Sal outdoor roda, the Beco do Rato courtyard, and the Copacabana boardwalk all reward open-air time. Tuesday holds: 28°C, 20% rain.
Ride-hailing: 99 and Uber at near-base fares on Monday — the lightest surge of the week. Copacabana to Saúde (Pedra do Sal) is twenty minutes. Lapa to Leblon is twenty minutes. All legs under R$25.
Safety: Copacabana boardwalk is well-lit. The Pedra do Sal area in Saúde is a cultural heritage site but standard awareness applies — the port district is quieter than Lapa and the streets between the largo and the VLT station are dimly lit. Arrive and depart with a group or use ride-hailing. Lapa on Monday is very quiet — stick to Mem de Sá and Joaquim Silva.
