Rio de Janeiro decrees total closure of its beaches as of Saturday due to Covid-19

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes issued a decree in the Municipal Gazette this Friday, March 19th, ordering the closure of beaches, forbidding the entry of chartered buses into the city and the parking of vehicles on the beachfront – kiosks, however, can operate normally.

The measures aim to contain the spread of Covid-19 in the capital and are complementary to those determined a week ago by the mayor.

The new rules come into force at midnight this Saturday, March 20th, and will remain in force until 5 AM on Monday, March 22nd. According to the decree, the assessment of the epidemiological situation in the city was considered in order to decide on the measures. The goal is also to ensure the proper operation of healthcare services and preserve public health.

The full list of restrictions in the city of Rio de Janeiro:

I – the permanence of individuals on the sand strip on beaches, at any time of the day, including the practice of sports, swimming and the exercise of any economic activity, including fixed and itinerant trade and the rendering of services of any nature;

II – the entry of buses and other charter vehicles in the Municipality, except those providing regular services for company employees or hotels, whose passengers can prove a lodging reservation;

III – the parking of motor vehicles all along the beachfront, except for residents, seniors, people with special needs, hotel guests, and cabs;

IV – the use of the pedestrian lanes of Delfim Moreira, Vieira Souto and Atlântica Avenues and both directions of running lanes of the Flamengo Aterro as leisure areas.
