Raízen to Sell R$ 1 Billion in Renewable Energy Assets to Reduce Debt

Raízen, a major player in Brazil’s sugar and ethanol industry, is set to sell a collection of renewable energy assets valued at around R$ 1 billion ($170 Million).

This decision comes as the company looks to reduce its debt and streamline operations. The assets for sale include small solar plants, small hydropower plants, and biogas facilities that Raízen has deemed non-essential.

The company aims to focus on its core business while enhancing customer service. By partnering with operators of these renewable plants, Raízen plans to offer energy solutions without owning the assets directly.

This approach allows them to maintain a competitive edge in the market. Earlier this year, Raízen sold 40 solar generation units to Brasol, an investment backed by BlackRock and Siemens.

This deal involved operational projects in São Paulo with a total capacity of 157 MW. Although the financial details were not disclosed, this sale illustrates Raízen’s strategy to optimize its asset portfolio.

Raízen’s Strategic Asset Sales

In another significant move, Raízen sold 31 solar plants to Élis Energia for R$ 700 million ($116 Million) in April. These transactions reflect the company’s intent to divest non-core assets while concentrating on sugar and ethanol production.

The timing of these asset sales is crucial as Raízen seeks to improve its financial standing. Additionally, the company is selling the Leme plant in São Paulo, which does not align with its focus on second-generation ethanol production.

As a joint venture between Cosan and Shell, Raízen is actively managing its asset base. The upcoming sale of approximately R$ 1 billion ($166.67 Million) in renewable energy assets marks a strategic shift towards financial health.

While companies have negotiated similar transactions worth about R$ 1 billion ($170 million) this year, these funds have yet to impact cash flow.
