Peru is positioned as a leading birding destination in the Global Birdfair 2022

Peru returned strongly to the Global Birdfair in the United Kingdom, a prestigious international event specializing in birdwatching and nature, and positioned itself as a leading birdwatching destination, the Commission for the Promotion of Peru for Export and Tourism (Promperu) highlighted.

At the event, Peru reaffirmed itself as a megadiverse destination, ideal for birdwatching, Promperu stressed. Peru returned to this event after two years of absence due to the covid-19 pandemic.

Promperú emphasized that the Global Birdfair, which specializes in birdwatching and nature, is aimed at the end consumer, making it one of the most important eco-tourism events in the world.

In that sense, the most requested destinations by the attendees who visited the Peruvian stand were Cusco, Madre de Dios, Chiclayo, Amazonas, San Martin, Cajamarca, and Loreto. National participation in international events of this magnitude is key to boosting the reactivation process of inbound tourism.

The event took place from July 15 to 17 in Rutland (United Kingdom), bringing together more than 10,000 visitors and 240 exhibitors.

The National Chamber of Tourism (Canatur), the Peruvian Association of Adventure Tourism (Aptae), and the North American Bird and Nature Tourism Council (Conave) also participated in the national stand, led by Promperu.

It is worth mentioning that last year our country was crowned world champion in birdwatching in the Global Big Day 2021, the largest birdwatching competition of its kind.

Likewise, another very significant event for birdwatching tourism took place: South American Birdfair, the most important specialized fair in South America, where Peru will be the host.

The event, to be held in Cusco from October 27 to 30, will offer lectures, forums, and symposiums, as well as various activities for exchange and growth in tourism and nature, areas that are growing throughout the continent.

Promperu highlighted that its Tourism Promotion Directorate has been working since 2012 to promote Peru as a national birdwatching destination, to strengthen our country’s positioning within the framework of various promotional strategies also dedicated to boosting nature tourism activities, encouraging the conservation and promotion of our wildlife.

BIRDWATCHER PROFILE

Peru has the second-largest number of bird species globally, with more than 1,800, of which 117 are endemic. Peru’s vast biodiversity makes it one of the world’s leading destinations for birdwatching.

Thus, vacationers who visit Peru for activities related to birdwatching spend a long time on national soil: 16 nights on average, longer than the average stay of foreign tourists, so this activity generates high profitability.

This market has a high potential to diversify Peru’s destinations, contributing to the economic progress of our country’s regions. It is worth mentioning that international birdwatchers’ associations represent an attractive potential market with more than 9 million members.
