Peru: 17 regions increase their exports during the first semester of 2022

The Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Roberto Sánchez, highlighted that in the first six months of 2022, seventeen regions in the interior of Peru increased their exports thanks to the increase in international prices and the development of new productive projects such as Mina Justa, in Ica.

For all these reasons, at least ten regions are expected to close this year with record global shipment figures, highlighting Cusco, Arequipa, Ica, Ancash, and La Libertad, precisely the regions that contribute most to the country’s exports. “Exports have been the highest in history,” added the head of Mincetur.

Likewise, according to the Regional Trade Report-June 2022, prepared by Mincetur, in the January-June 2022 period, the regions that have most increased their shipments to the world are those located in the jungle. In fact, “all jungle regions increased their exports in this period,” the report states.

The growth of exports from the jungle was mainly due to higher sales of coffee (+167%) and palm oil (+126%), goods whose international prices have increased by more than 50% in the first half of the year compared to the same period of 2021.

Exports of forestry (+65%), gold (+38%), and Brazil nuts (+17%) also grew. Exports of cocoa and derivatives, mainly attributed to the jungle regions, amounted to US$ 135 million, a value 10% higher than that recorded in the same period of 2021.

According to the Report, Peru’s southern regions increased their shipments to the world by 21% in the first half of 2022, thanks to higher natural gas and minerals sales.

The southern regions that increased their exports the most were Cusco (+107%), due to higher natural gas sales (+388%); and Arequipa (+35%) due to higher molybdenum (+155%) and copper (+39%) sales.

On the other hand, the country’s northern regions increased their exports in the first half of the year by 12% due to higher sales of non-metallic minerals, agricultural goods, and hydrocarbons.

The regions of Tumbes (+30%) stood out due to higher shrimp sales; Ancash (+11%) due to higher zinc exports (+28%); La Libertad (+12%) due to higher blueberry sales (+118%); and Piura (+17%), due to higher calcium phosphate exports (+50%).
