New Series of Argentine Film Screenings in Rio de Janeiro

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Beginning August 18th, Caixa Cultural Rio de Janeiro in Centro will screen seventeen films from Argentina as part of the series, Cinema Argentina Rebelde (Rebel Argentina Cinema). Continuing through August 30th, the series will include films never before shown in Brazil, as well as, discussions and courses about Argentina’s political and cinematic history.

Curated by film critic and researcher, Victor Guimarães, the films selected to screen as part of the series were produced between the years of 1942 and 2013. The seventeen films are long, medium and short in length.

Including works from early social cinema, New Cinema, and contemporary cinema, the collection of films explores the connection between the country’s turbulent history and the use of film as a medium to fight oppression.

“The sense of rebellion that brings together the works of this exhibition is twofold and indivisible,” Guimarães wrote in a statement about the screenings, “the resistance to social injustice and political repression in Argentina has an ally in cinema. It’s insubordination in the face of hegemony.”

The collection of films also shows the development of Argentina’s film industry, one of the three largest markets, along with Brazil and Mexico, in Latin America.

Notable films featured in the festival include the first production by acclaimed filmmaker Edgardo Cozarinsky, which once thought lost was restored in 2011, and Hugo Santiago’s 1969 film “Invasión,” which will open the festival.
