SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL – The governor of São Paulo, João Doria, announced this Friday, August 9th, the installation of a Huawei plant in the state of São Paulo in 2021. The city has not yet been determined and should be disclosed in the coming months.
The investment amounts to US$800 million (R$3.2 billion) over the next three years (2020 to 2022), said the governor, who is traveling across China.
The city will be chosen, taking into account logistics, workforce availability, technical conditions for the deployment of the new site, and the new plant.
The company is already operating a plant in Sorocaba, a city in upstate São Paulo, which employs 2,000 direct staff and 15,000 indirect workers.
The agreement seeks to prepare the Chinese company, the world’s second-largest cell phone manufacturer behind only Samsung, for the demand of the 5G auction in Brazil, scheduled for March next year. Huawei supplies equipment used by telecommunications operators.
Huawei will also invest in the education sector, in an innovation, technology, and digitalization program of the public school network in elementary and primary education.
