Murders in Brazil down 5% in the first half of the year

The number of murders in Brazil will continue to decline in 2022. This is according to the National Homicide Index compiled by g1, based on official data from 26 states and the Federal District.

In the first six months of this year, there were 20,100 homicides, down 5% from the same period last year.

Still, the number is high, with an average of more than 111 Brazilians murdered per day in the first half of 2022.

In Roraima state, the decrease was the highest, at 34%. Rondônia state registered the highest increase in crimes: 24%.

The survey, which compiles data month by month, is part of the Violence Monitor, a partnership between g1, the Center for the Study of Violence at the University of São Paulo (NEV-USP), and the Brazilian Public Security Forum.

The most significant decrease was in the Southeast region, dropping almost 7.5%. The number of deaths decreased by nearly 393, with a reduction in all states except Minas Gerais (increase of 2%).

In Espírito Santo, for example, the number of homicides in the first half of the year was the lowest in 26 years. Compared to the same period last year, there was a decrease of over 16%.

Rio de Janeiro also saw a significant decrease: Violent deaths fell from 1,810 last year to 1,515 this year (-16%). Even in 2021, intentional homicides in Rio reached an all-time low, according to the Public Security Institute.

According to Paulo Storani, a public safety specialist, investments in offensive policing and in the distribution of police officers throughout the city may have contributed to the decline and deployments.
