Milei’s Economic Reforms Bring Big Money Back to Argentine Soccer

Javier Milei’s economic policies have sparked a financial revival in Argentine soccer, reshaping a sport long constrained by economic instability.

Historically, local clubs struggled to retain talent, losing players to wealthier international teams. Today, thanks to Milei’s reforms, clubs are spending big, repatriating stars, and even attracting foreign talent.

River Plate made waves in January with a $10 million deal to bring back Sebastián Driussi from Austin FC. The spending spree continued with Gonzalo Montiel, a 2022 World Cup hero, rejoining River Plate, Alan Velasco signing with Boca Juniors, and Facundo Farías heading to Estudiantes.

Foreign players from Spain, Brazil, and Colombia have also joined the league. Over 20 players now earn $1 million or more annually in Argentina—double the number from recent years.

This turnaround stems from Milei’s aggressive fiscal policies aimed at stabilizing the peso. His administration slashed government spending by 30%, froze public wages below inflation, and halted infrastructure projects.

Argentina’s Soccer Landscape Amid Economic Reforms

These measures reduced inflation from 25% per month in late 2023 to 3.5% by September 2024. The stronger peso has boosted purchasing power, allowing clubs to compete financially for talent.

However, risks remain. Economists warn that the peso may be overvalued due to government-controlled exchange rates. A sudden devaluation could leave clubs unable to meet dollar-linked contracts paid in pesos.

Racing Club Vice President Hernán Lacunza emphasized the need for financial planning to manage these risks. Milei has also pushed for privatizing soccer clubs—currently nonprofit organizations—to attract private investment.

While some see this as a way to modernize the sport and bring in billions of dollars, critics argue it could prioritize profits over community values. Fans and club leaders remain divided on whether privatization would strengthen or undermine Argentina’s soccer legacy.

Milei’s policies have brought short-term gains to Argentine soccer, but questions about long-term sustainability and cultural impact linger as the nation balances economic modernization with its deep-rooted love for the game.
