Milei Flags Monopoly Risk in Telefónica’s $1.25 Billion Sale to Telecom Argentina

The $1.25 billion sale of Telefónica Argentina to Telecom Argentina has raised alarms over potential market monopolization, prompting President Javier Milei’s administration to intervene.

The deal, finalized on February 24, 2025, transfers control of Telefónica’s operations to Telecom. Grupo Clarín, Argentina’s most influential media conglomerate, partly owns Telecom.

If approved, the transaction could consolidate 70% of the country’s telecommunications market under a single economic group. Milei’s government has assigned two regulatory bodies to investigate the acquisition.

In addition, the Ente Nacional de Comunicaciones (ENaCom) and the Comisión Nacional de Defensa de la Competencia (CNDC) will assess whether the acquisition violates competition laws.

Officials warned that such market concentration could harm consumer choice and undermine free competition. The administration stated it would take necessary steps to prevent monopolistic practices if regulators confirm these risks.

Telefónica’s Exit from Argentina
