“Mercado Libre” integrates bitcoin and ether trading across Latin America

Argentine e-commerce giant Mercado Libre will offer its bitcoin (BTC) and ether (ETH) trading services across Latin America. Having already served more than one million cryptocurrency users in Brazil, the company will expand its bitcoin trading service.

According to Osvaldo Gimenez, CEO of Mercado Pago, the fintech (financial technology) division of “Mercado Libre,” ” we will expand in the region the ability to buy, sell and have cryptocurrencies in your account.”

It is unknown when the service will be available in other Latin American countries or where it will be integrated first. It is also unclear whether the service will be rolled out under the same conditions as in Brazil.

In South America’s largest economy, trading Bitcoin and Ether has been possible since December last year. Since then, Brazilians have been trading these cryptocurrencies directly through the Mercado Libre app, which is integrated with the platform of cryptocurrency service provider Paxos.

“Three months after the launch of this feature in our app @mercadopago, we have already counted one million crypto buyers in Brazil,” the company’s founder and CEO Marcos Galperín rejoiced in March.

Before offering cryptocurrency services, “Mercado Libre” bought US$7.8 million worth of bitcoins in the first quarter of 2021 as part of its new treasury strategy.

In addition, the company has opened a section in Argentina for purchasing and selling land and real estate, which allows payment with Bitcoin.
